The competition brief established three distinct zones based on the nature of the intervention: interior renovation of the hospital building for staff (Level -3), an extension above the existing Tomotherapy building (Levels +0 and +1), and new construction to fulfill the program requirements. After an initial analysis, we challenged the initial key eleements of the proposal and developed new conceptual and technical approaches regarding functionality and circulation, natural light, and site development.
The proposal is directly influenced by the available space and the new CT scanner building. The main element is the treatment bunker, whose dimensions and maintenance areas are spread over two levels and require very demanding specifications for shape and concrete thickness. Its access level must necessarily be at level -1, which is also the level of the CT scanner building.
The bunker is planned parallel to, but separate from, the CT building. The newly constructed spaces located between the bunker and the CT building house the building’s interior mechanical systems on level -2, the portion of the unit that must be adjacent to the treatment room on level -1, the outpatient area on level 0, and the staff area on level 1, which also extends over the CT building to accommodate the roof installations and the clinical connection to the hospital. The building created after integrating the CT building is configured with clean, rational volumes that combine functionality and adaptation to the surrounding area.
