Isla de la Cartuja, Seville (Spain)
The starting point is a building that was built in 2014 as a Hospital Center for the Cartuja Institute of Advanced Techniques in Medicine. It is located in the Cartuja Science and Technology Park, the building consists of seven floors, two underground, and is structured in bands perpendicular to the street, with three longitudinal courtyards that distribute the program.
The hospital was never used and remained closed until the Virgen Macarena University Hospital incorporated it as a new facility in its hospital area. The acquisition of this new public assintance space is being developed under the premise of using it initially as a COVID-19 center (Phase I), and then converting it into a Maternal-Neonatal Hospital (Phase II).
This new hospital allows the Virgen Macarena University Hospital to be re-organized, creating a cutting-edge clinical service focused entirely on women’s, newborn, and maternity care.
The main objectives are to create a Neonatology and Comprehensive Childbirth Care area, to equip the building’s Surgical Block, and to renovate the Diagnostic Imaging area focused on pathologies and clinical demands in women’s and pregnancy care. The center also undertakes general interventions to improve the building’s maintenance and operation, as well as its accessibility and compliance with current regulations.
